Work
Living with allergies at work can be challenging, but there are clear steps you can take to stay safe and supported.
Your rights
Severe allergies may be classed as a disability under the Equality Act 2010.
Employers have a duty of care to keep you safe and should make reasonable adjustments such as safe cleaning products, allergen-free areas, or flexible work arrangements.
Tell your manager or HR about your allergy so adjustments can be made.
Safety at Work
Employers should carry out a risk assessment to spot allergens like dust, chemicals, latex, or food.
Measures can include better ventilation, allergen-free cleaning, and avoiding latex gloves or products.
Clear labelling and safe storage of allergens are essential for safety.
Prepare for emergencies
You should have a personal allergy action plan at work.
Keep your adrenaline auto-injector accessible at all times.
Colleagues and first aiders should be trained to recognise symptoms of anaphylaxis and know how to use an injector.
Always call 999 after giving adrenaline, even if symptoms improve.
